Served His Country As a Navy Seal
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Kaufman attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in systems engineering. He graduated from the academy with distinction, the highest academic honor.
Following graduation, he moved to Coronado, California, and reported to Basic Underwater Demolition School (BUDS), also known as Navy SEAL training. After graduating with Class 156, he was assigned to SEAL Team 5. As an active duty naval special warfare officer, he served four busy and exciting years, including duty in Operation Desert Storm. Dr. Kaufman feels privileged to serve our great nation and is extremely proud of this personal achievement.
FROM HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL TO STANFORD RESIDENCY
After his military service, Dr. Kaufman attended Harvard Medical School, receiving his medical doctor degree in 1996. His surgical training in a combined general and plastic surgery residency was conducted at Stanford University Medical Center.
Following the completion of his residency, he served as the Interplast Jerome P. Webster Fellow. Interplast is a non-profit organization based in Mountain View, California, that provides plastic and reconstructive surgery to needy children and adults in the developing world. Dr. Kaufman has participated in over 30 surgical overseas missions and has performed operations on more than 750 patients in this capacity. This is one of his proudest accomplishments.
Since completing his residency and fellowship in plastic surgery, Dr. Kaufman has been in a very busy practice of both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. He has had the honor of being the director of the Regional Burn Unit at Valley Medical Center and serving on the volunteer clinical faculty at Stanford University Medical Center. He is a proud member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
In 2005, largely for family reasons, Dr. Kaufman moved his practice to the Sacramento area. He loves the community and the wonderful patients that he has the privilege to treat. His family, including wife Kate (formerly Shallenberger), sons Trevor and Grant, and daughter Ava, lives in Sacramento. Outside interests include athletics, travel, and volunteer work.

- 01I get horribly seasick. I did not know this before I joined the Navy. I was almost always the first one in my platoon to get seasick on any mission. No one liked to sit next to me because they all knew what was coming.
- 02I gave up a blind date with Gwyneth Paltrow to keep dating my then girlfriend, now wife, Kate. It’s a long story but a friend of mine was friends with Gwyneth’s dad and she had just broken it off with Brad Pitt and wanted out of the Hollywood scene. He set up a blind date one Friday night, but I canceled. Great choice…now 20 years later.
- 03I could live on ice cream. Breyers mint chocolate chip, pralines and cream, and cookies and cream are my favs.
- 04I sat next to Linda Carter, also known as WONDER WOMAN, on a plane! Like a total gentleman would, I placed her bag in the overhead for her. At 60 plus, she is still super duper hot!
- 05My favorite movie of all time is Top Gun. I was stationed in San Diego at the time the movie came out, and we would often go to the Officers’ Club in Miramar to live out the movie! I was into beach volleyball at the time and was featured in a Navy Seal calendar – a few more muscles and way tanner back then!
- 06My nearest death experience was when I was in Kodiak, Alaska. Our Seal squad was doing a night transit in a zodiac across uncharted waters and my dry suit broke. The rubber seals froze and cracked open. We could not see anything and we had about an hour and a half of our transit to go to reach safe harbor. If our boat flipped or the engine crapped out, I would likely have died a miserable hypothermic death. We made it thanks to David Gutierrez…serious near miss.
- 07I am trying to learn to play the guitar. I’ve been at it for about a year now. I totally love it. It lights up a part of my brain that’s not math, science or analytics! I look forward to it every day!
- 08My Seal Team’s commanding officer introduced me to a surgeon he knew (they were in a car club together) when I told him I wanted to go to medical school. That man turned out to be one of the most influential mentors of my life! He helped me decide which medical school to attend and gave me sage advice for years. His name was Dr. Gene Apple…sadly he passed away a couple of years ago.
- 09I’ve been to 38 or so countries! My favorite remains Myanmar. Beautiful country, awesome people, fantastic food! Our next big family trip is going to be Vietnam, Indonesia and the Maldives.
- 10I totally love what I do. I’ve done over ten thousand surgeries as an attending surgeon in the U.S. I’ve also done about thirty international trips and have helped roughly 750 children with cleft lip and palate deformities – my professional accomplishment of which I am the most proud.
