Best Candidates for Breast Augmentation
Many women feel self-conscious about having small breasts, or feel that their figure looks underdeveloped or less feminine than curvier women. We understand that breast augmentation isn’t the perfect answer for every woman, so we’ll listen to all your concerns to ensure you’re making the decision that can best help you meet your personal cosmetic goals.
The best candidates for breast augmentation surgery are women who are physically and psychologically healthy and who have realistic expectations about their results. In some cases, women with drooping or sagging breasts may include a breast lift in addition to getting breast implants. Some women opt for a combination breast augmentation and lift after significant weight loss to achieve a firmer, more toned appearance.
Breast augmentation is also often included as part of a mommy makeover – a customized procedure that combines multiple surgeries into one. Additionally, breast implants can form the foundation of breast reconstruction surgery following a mastectomy.

Your Breast Augmentation Consultation
Before your breast enlargement, you’ll schedule a consultation at The Natural Result / Center for Aesthetic Artistry. During this visit, we’ll discuss your breast augmentation expectations, as well as options for incision placement, implant placement, desired post-operative breast size and how to achieve the most natural-looking results.
Oftentimes, bringing in photographs of your ideal proportions can help us better determine together the best methods to help you meet those goals. We can use Vectra 3D imaging to show you what a variety of implants could look like on your own body. Finally, you’ll be given detailed instructions to follow before and after your surgery, helping you feel more confident about exactly what to expect at every step along the way.
Your Breast Augmentation Options
During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will discuss your various breast augmentation options – including implant size, type and placement – and help you make informed decisions that will best suit your natural body type and cosmetic goals.
Implant Size and Profile
Selecting a breast implant size is an important and exciting part of the planning process. Breast implants are measured in cubic centimeters (ccs) of volume rather than cup size, since cup sizes are not uniform. With the help of imaging tools like Vectra 3D, we will help you visualize different sizes and profiles of breast implants to help you get a better idea of how each one may look on your body.
The profile of your implants refers to how far they will project outward from your chest. Breast implants come in high, medium and low profiles, with high profiles projecting the most and low profiles projecting the least.
Silicone vs. Saline Implants
Deciding on what type of breast implant to use is just as important as choosing the breast implant size. The majority of our patients find that silicone breast implants provide the most natural-feeling results. However, thanks to modern-day advancements, saline implants can provide beautiful results for the right candidate.
Our surgeons use Sientra silicone gel breast implants. Sientra implants are FDA approved and have an unrivaled safety profile, with some of the lowest complication rates clinically shown through a robust 10-year study*.
Not only are Sientra implants safe, but they are also backed by their Platinum 20™ year warranty, which provides the longest length of coverage, most financial assistance and least restrictions in the industry. Sientra implants are designed to hold their shape while maintaining a remarkably soft feel. With two surface types, over 340 implant options and 5 projection levels, Sientra breast implants can help you see the look you’ve always wanted.

Submuscular vs. Subglandular Implant Placement
Next, you’ll discuss the placement location of your breast implants with your plastic surgeon. You have two options: submuscular or subglandular placement. Submuscular breast implants are placed underneath both the natural breast tissue and chest muscles. Subglandular implants are placed beneath natural breast tissue but above the chest muscles.
There are unique advantages to each placement location and the right selection for you will depend on a variety of factors, including your natural body shape and type, how active you are and your personal preferences.
Incision Technique
There are several incision techniques that our expert plastic surgeons can use in order to place your breast implants. However, the inframammary incision is the most popular and allows for the most precision. This incision is created along the natural crease beneath your breasts, easily concealing scars and allowing your plastic surgeon optimal visualization when positioning your implants.
Other breast augmentation incision techniques are the periareolar incision, made in a semi-circle along the lower half of the areolas, and the transaxillary incision, made in the underarm area.
Breast Implants vs. Breast Lift
Breast augmentation can achieve excellent results on its own, adding volume and addressing asymmetry. However, if you experience significant breast ptosis, or sagging, your plastic surgeon may recommend including a breast lift with your breast enhancement procedure. Through a breast lift, your plastic surgeon is able to remove and tighten loose skin while repositioning the breasts to achieve a perkier, more youthful appearance.
Breast augmentation and a breast lift are easily combined into a single procedure and should not affect your overall recovery time.
Your Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation typically takes about 1 to 2 hours to complete, depending on whether additional procedures are scheduled at the same time. You can plan on returning home shortly after your surgery, as breast enlargement is performed as an outpatient procedure. Because your breast augmentation will be performed under general anesthesia, you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home from your procedure and stay with you for the first 24 hours.
Recovery & Results
After your breast augmentation, you will have dressings placed over the incision site that will be covered with compression bandages. This is intended to keep the area clean and help to reduce swelling. Getting plenty of rest should be your goal for the first week or so. Light walking around the house when you are ready is recommended, as it can help to promote healthy circulation and aid in recovery.
Since the muscles and tissue have been manipulated to fit your breast implants, you can expect to feel some tightness in your chest. Your breasts may appear square or elongated due to this tightness. These after-effects are a natural part of the process. As your body continues to heal and adjust, your breast implants should settle into a more natural position.
This phase of breast augmentation recovery is called the “drop and fluff” stage. As the muscles stretch and relax, your breast implants will “drop” down and out into the intended position, and “fluff” or fill out the lower half of the breast to reveal a more natural breast shape. This process can take up to three months, so be patient as your results gradually improve over time.
While you may notice changes to the size of your breasts soon after surgery, it will take some time before you see your final results. Every woman’s body is unique, so there is no guarantee that your recovery and results will follow a specific timeline. However, many women continue to see improvements for 3 to 6 months after their procedure.
