Best Candidates for a Mommy Makeover
Many women find even the most diligent diet and exercise program cannot correct post-pregnancy concerns such as sagging breasts, excess skin, weakened or separated abdominal muscle tissue and fat deposits in areas like the hips and waist.
Ideal candidates for a mommy makeover are women who are healthy, at a stable weight and want to correct post-pregnancy concerns such as excess fat, sagging skin, muscle laxity and lost breast volume.
This procedure also can be ideal for busy moms who want to achieve their cosmetic goals without the downtime required for separate staged procedures. Women should wait to have surgery until they are finished having children, since pregnancy and breastfeeding after your mommy makeover can compromise your overall results and may require additional surgery.
It’s important to have realistic goals regarding which procedures can be combined, and your plastic surgeon can help you understand which treatments are appropriate for your needs.

Mommy Makeover Options
Mommy makeovers are designed to target those areas most affected by pregnancy, and each procedure is customized to match the personal needs of the patient. We will work closely with you to help you create a customized mommy makeover to best meet your aesthetic goals.
While you can choose to include or exclude virtually any procedure in your mommy makeover, some of the most popular treatments in a mommy makeover are a tummy tuck, liposuction, body lift, breast enhancement procedures and a Brazilian butt lift.
Tummy Tuck
For many women, the abdominal area is one of the biggest challenges after pregnancy. Not only can pregnancy lead to loose or excess skin in this area, but it can also cause a condition known as diastasis recti, which can lead to a permanent protrusion or “belly pooch” that can’t be addressed through exercise alone. Diastasis recti happens when there is partial or complete separation of the abdominal muscles.
A mommy makeover that includes a tummy tuck can address this ab separation during surgery to achieve a flatter tummy and smoother waistline.
Liposuction
Liposuction is very commonly combined with a tummy tuck to remove stubborn pockets of fat that do not respond well to diet and exercise alone. However, you can also choose to add liposuction to other areas of your body during a mommy makeover, such as the arms, thighs or back, to achieve a more comprehensive final result.
Body Lift
If loose skin in other areas of your body besides your stomach, such as your thighs, buttocks or back, is a cosmetic concern, you might consider including a body lift with your mommy makeover. Through this procedure, your plastic surgeon is able to circumferentially remove and tighten excess skin in the midsection to lift your lower body, creating a tighter and more toned body shape.
Breast Procedures
Pregnancy and breastfeeding often takes a toll on the size, shape and position of the breasts. For this reason, many women choose to include a breast procedure or two in their mommy makeover. Breast augmentation can add a boost of volume to the breasts, which can often help “deflated” breasts look and feel fuller and more youthful after breastfeeding.
A breast lift can be added to your mommy makeover with or without implants to address breast ptosis or sagging.
On the other hand, some women find that breastfeeding has exacerbated overly large breasts, which can make exercise and other physical activities uncomfortable. In this case, a breast reduction can help by reducing the overall size of your breasts.
Brazilian Butt Lift
Some women find that changes to their body shape during and after pregnancy has left them with a flatter backside than they would like. A Brazilian butt lift can add subtle, natural-looking volume to your buttocks and can complement the results of a tummy tuck and/or liposuction.
Your Mommy Makeover Consult
Prior to your procedure, you will schedule a consultation at The Natural Result / Center for Aesthetic Artistry. This consultation is designed as a forum for you and your surgeon to discuss your specific areas of concern and cosmetic goals. In addition, you will learn about your options. For example, if you are interested in liposuction and breast augmentation, your doctor will explain the different types of liposuction and also discuss options such as breast implant type.
During your consultation, you and your surgeon will determine together which procedures should be used to achieve the results you desire. This is also a great opportunity to ask any questions or address any concerns you might have to help you ultimately determine if a mommy makeover is right for you.
Preparing for Your Mommy Makeover
After your consultation and before your surgery, your doctor will give you preparation guidelines and a timeline specific to your mommy makeover. Below are some more general mommy makeover preparation tips to help you get an idea of what to expect before your procedure.
- Achieve any applicable weight loss goals. For best results, our plastic surgeons typically recommend coming within 20 pounds of your target weight before getting a mommy makeover.
- Stop smoking for at least 6-weeks before and after your mommy makeover.
- Get lab work done. Prior to surgery, your doctor may order some basic lab work to ensure you are in good health and a good candidate for this procedure.
- Stop taking certain medications and supplements. Work with your plastic surgeon and primary care physician to make medication adjustments as needed before surgery. Some medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen and blood thinners can increase the risk of certain complications during surgery. For this reason, you may be asked to temporarily stop taking these medications or certain supplements.
- Arrange for transportation and extra help. You will need someone to drive you to and from your procedure and will need some extra help around the house and with childcare and/or petcare for the first couple of weeks after your mommy makeover.
Your Mommy Makeover Procedure
Mommy makeovers are performed under general anesthesia as outpatient procedures, so you can plan on heading home later the same day as your surgery. The exact duration of your surgery will depend on factors like the type and number of procedures you’ve chosen to include. Generally speaking, however, most mommy makeovers take around 3 to 5 hours to complete.
Once your mommy makeover is complete, you will be moved to a recovery room and monitored prior to being discharged to go home. Depending on which procedures were performed, you may be sent home with a compression garment, which you will need to wear for several weeks to aid in the healing process and reduce swelling.
Mommy Makeover Recovery
Recovery from a mommy makeover is specific to how extensive your particular combination of procedures is. You may feel uncomfortable or sore at first and will likely experience some amount of bruising and swelling. Your doctor will talk with you about your expected recovery time, advising you on your reduced activity levels.
Most of our Sacramento mommy makeover patients can expect to take 2 weeks off from a desk job, and 4 to 6 weeks off of a physical job. You should be able to be back to aerobic exercises after 4 weeks, and back to core workouts at 8 weeks.
Mommy Makeover Results
Although individual results vary, mommy makeover results are typically noticeable soon after surgery. However, swelling and bruising can hide these initial results, so be patient with your body as it heals and your results continue to develop. Within a few weeks, swelling should begin to subside and your results should become more and more visible. Final mommy makeover results can take 6 months or more to fully develop.
While a mommy makeover surgery can provide long-lasting results, you need to do your part to maintain those results. Maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly can help you to enjoy your new body shape for years to come.
