A breast lift and breast augmentation using implants are two of the most common breast enhancement procedures. In many cases, these two popular procedures are combined to get the best of both worlds – but not everyone who opts for a breast lift necessarily needs implants, and not everyone who wants breast implants necessarily needs a breast lift.
So how do you decide if you should get a breast lift with implants or a breast lift on its own? The plastic surgeons at The Natural Result / Center for Aesthetic Artistry break down the basics here.
Breast Lift vs. Breast Augmentation: What’s the Difference?
A breast lift on its own removes and tightens excess skin and tissue–that otherwise cause drooping or sagging–in order to lift and reshape the breasts to a more youthful-looking position. This procedure does not add breast volume and, in fact, may make the breasts appear slightly smaller due to the tightening of excess skin.
A breast augmentation, on the other hand, does add volume to the breasts using implants. In many cases, your plastic surgeon can also address concerns such as asymmetry during a breast augmentation, but if you would also like to address significant breast ptosis, or sagging, you will likely need to include a breast lift with your augmentation.
When Might a Breast Lift Without Implants Make Sense?
A breast lift alone can be a great option if you are happy with the size of your breasts but want to correct sagging or drooping. Many women choose this procedure after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, when the breasts tend to lose firmness and begin to sag.
If your nipples point downward, sit below the crease of your breast, or if your breasts look elongated or deflated, a breast lift without implants can restore a perkier, rounder appearance without significantly changing their size.
When to Consider a Breast Lift with Implants
If you want to both lift and enlarge your breasts, a combination breast lift with implants could be the best fit. This option is often popular among women who notice sagging along with a loss of fullness in the upper portion of the breast. Implants can restore or enhance cleavage, improve symmetry and create a more youthful contour, while the lift repositions the breast tissue for a firmer, perkier look and feel.
If you want to increase your breast size and do not have significant sagging or excess skin, your plastic surgeon may recommend breast implants without a lift.
