Women choose to have their breast implants removed for a number of reasons, including a change in personal preferences, major life events, medical reasons and others. Whatever the motivation, one of the most common questions we are asked is, “What will my breasts look like after implant removal?”
In this guide, our plastic surgeons explain what to expect during and after your breast implant removal procedure so you are equipped with everything you need to help prepare for this change.
What to Expect During Breast Implant Removal
Breast implant removal, also known as breast explant surgery, is typically a straightforward procedure that aims to restore your pre-augmentation appearance. Depending on your unique circumstances, your plastic surgeon may be able to use the same incision site from your initial breast augmentation to help minimize scarring. During the procedure, the implants are carefully removed, and, in some cases, the surrounding scar tissue or capsule is also removed.
If your implants are ruptured or if you have developed a condition like capsular contracture, your plastic surgeon will take additional steps to address these issues. The overall goal is to restore your natural breast contour while maintaining your health and comfort.
What to Expect After Breast Explant Surgery
Immediately following your breast implant removal, you will likely notice some swelling and bruising. While these side effects are temporary, they can make it difficult to assess your final results right away. Below is a general timeline of what to expect your breasts to look like as you recover and once you’ve fully healed:
- First few days. Swelling, bruising and mild discomfort are common. Your breasts may look flatter and deflated due to the absence of the implants and swelling.
- First few weeks. As swelling begins to subside, you’ll be able to see the initial shape of your natural breasts. Some women may see loose or sagging skin at this stage.
- 3 to 6 months. By this time, your breasts will have largely settled into their natural shape and position, and you should have a good idea of what your final results will look like.
Every woman’s body will respond differently to breast explant surgery, and unwanted effects such as loose skin, sagging or downward-pointing nipples and areolas can affect some women more than others. The extent of these effects will depend on factors like the size of your implants, how long they were in place, your age and the elasticity of your skin.
Combining Breast Implant Removal with Other Procedures
Some women choose to pair breast implant removal with additional procedures, such as a breast lift. A breast lift can address loose or sagging skin by tightening and repositioning the breast tissue for a more youthful appearance. However, this is not always necessary. For women with smaller implants or excellent skin elasticity, their breasts may adjust naturally without additional surgery.
We will work closely with you before your breast implant removal procedure, to discuss your options and help you decide whether or not adding a breast lift to your implant removal could be beneficial.
