Breast Implant FAQs
Every patient has questions before breast augmentation. Some are about the surgery itself. Others are about recovery, long-term maintenance, pregnancy, exercise, or simply everyday life with breast implants.
Below are some of the questions we hear most often from our patients in consultations. The best way to get all your questions answered? Contact us and come in for your own personal consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons.
-
How long does surgery take? Most breast augmentations take approximately one hour. Adding procedures such as a breast lift or internal bra may increase operative time.
-
Will I wake up in pain? Most patients are pleasantly surprised. While everyone experiences discomfort differently, modern anesthesia, long-acting local anesthetics, and multimodal pain management have made recovery much more comfortable than it was years ago. Most of our patients describe tightness or muscle soreness rather than severe pain.
-
When can I drive?Generally, you will be cleared to drive when:
You are no longer taking prescription pain medication.
You feel comfortable turning the steering wheel.
You can react normally in an emergency.
For many patients, this is within several days. -
When can I return to work? That depends on your job.
Desk work: often 3–7 days
Light activity: approximately 1 week
Physically demanding jobs: often 3–6 weeks
Every recovery is different. -
When can I exercise?Light walking begins almost immediately. Most patients gradually return to:
Lower-body exercise after about 2 weeks
Light upper-body activity after 3–4 weeks
Full unrestricted exercise around 6 weeks, depending on healing and the procedure performed.
I always prefer a gradual return rather than rushing recovery. -
When can I sleep on my side? Most patients sleep on their back for the first couple of weeks. After that, side sleeping becomes progressively more comfortable. Sleeping on your stomach usually takes a little longer.
-
Will I lose nipple sensation?Temporary changes in nipple sensation are common. Permanent numbness or hypersensitivity is uncommon but can occur. Fortunately, most patients regain normal sensation over several months.
-
Will I still be able to breastfeed? Most women are able to breastfeed after breast augmentation. However, no surgeon can guarantee normal milk production, as this depends on many factors beyond the implants themselves.
-
Will people be able to tell I have implants? That depends largely on the choices we make together. Implants that match your anatomy generally produce a very natural appearance. Most patients tell us that their friends simply comment that they "look great" without realizing surgery was performed.
-
Can implants look natural?Absolutely. Today's implants, modern surgical techniques, and careful planning allow us to achieve remarkably natural results. Natural-looking breast augmentation is one of our surgeons’ primary goals.
-
How long do breast implants last?Modern implants are very durable. Some women will enjoy their implants for over 20 years. Others will require revision surgery sooner because of pregnancy, weight changes, rupture, capsular contracture, or changing preferences.
We generally recommend that patients expect another breast operation approximately every 15 years, recognizing that there is considerable individual variation. -
Will I set off airport security? No. Breast implants do not trigger airport metal detectors or security scanners. Travel is completely safe.
-
Can I fly after surgery?Yes. Most patients can safely fly within a few days after surgery, although we generally recommend avoiding unnecessary travel immediately after any operation so that we can monitor your early recovery.
-
Can implants rupture from flying, scuba diving, or everyday activities? No. Modern implants are designed to withstand normal changes in pressure encountered during commercial air travel and recreational scuba diving. Routine exercise and everyday activities do not normally damage implants.
-
Do I need routine MRI scans?Routine breast cancer screening is still based primarily on mammography. An MRI may be recommended in selected situations, including evaluating implant integrity or screening women at high risk for breast cancer.
-
Can I sleep without a bra?Yes. Once healing is complete, there is generally no medical requirement to wear a bra while sleeping. Some women prefer the support, while others are more comfortable without one.
-
Will pregnancy ruin my results? Not necessarily – but pregnancy causes changes in the breasts. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight fluctuations can stretch skin and alter breast volume regardless of whether implants are present.
Some women remain very happy with their results after having children, but others eventually choose revision surgery or a breast lift. -
What if I change my mind about implant size? You're not alone. Changing implant size is one of the most common reasons for revision surgery. While some women choose to go larger and others choose to go smaller, a revision surgery can help you feel like your look aligns better with your current preferences.
-
What if I have more questions after my consult? This is a good thing – you should! No patient remembers everything discussed during their consultation. We encourage patients to write down questions as they think of them and bring them to future visits. An informed patient is a confident patient.
